Impact Aid & Identification of Military Students

Impact Aid, just like local levy funds, helps to provide important resources for teachers, support staff, classroom computers, library books and other supplies and equipment to CPSD.

Section 7003 grants help educate federally connected children. These may be children of members of the uniformed services, children who live on Indian lands, children who live on federal property or federally subsidized low-rent housing, and children whose parent(s) work on federal property.

Impact Aid Student-parent Survey

As a military community, CPSD schools receive annual Impact Aid grants from the Federal Department of Education, which contribute to enriching the educational opportunities of all our students. The amount we receive is based on the number of students who have parents that work or live on federal properties such as Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM) or the VA Hospital at American Lake. More than 3,500 CPSD students fall in one or both categories.

Impact Aid Student-Parent surveys are sent out annually. It is pertinent that parent and student contact information be updated in Skyward Family Access to ensure delivery of communications for the Impact Aid Student-Parent Survey.

Identification of Military Connected Students

With the adoption of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), military-connected students are now recognized as a distinct subgroup, including students with a parent who is a member of the Armed Forces (defined in section 101(a)(1)(4) of title 10, United states Code) on active duty (as defined in section 101(d)(5) of such title.

More than 80 percent of military-connected students attend U.S. public schools. Students with parents/guardians who serve full-time in the military move and change schools frequently. In addition, they experience separation from a parent/guardian due to their parents’ service to the U.S. Military.
The Military Student Identifier (MSI) (which is often completed during student enrollment) provides educators with critical information to personalize attention to military-dependent children.

Military Interstate Children’s Compact Commission (MIC3)

It is Department of Defense policy to support the intent of the Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunity for Military Children by reducing the difficulty children of military families have in transferring between school systems because of frequent moves and deployment of their parents.
