Dual Language & World Language Immersion
Dual Language Program
CPSD is dedicated to creating a dynamic, multicultural learning environment where students from Spanish and English-speaking backgrounds achieve bilingual proficiency and cultural appreciation. For the 2025-26 school year, the district is offering two types of Dual Language programing to incoming kindergarten students; two-way Dual Language and World Language Immersion.
What are Dual Language and World Language Immersion Programs?
Two-Way Dual Language is a program that teaches students to become bilingual, biliterate, and bicultural. The program consists of an equal mix of students from English-speaking homes and students from Spanish-speaking homes.
World Language Immersion programs teach students to become bilingual, biliterate, and bicultural. Most of the students in this program are learning the target language for the first time.
Which schools offer the Dual Language and World Language Immersion programs?
Carter Lake and Hillside elementary schools offers a Spanish World Language Immersion Program for incoming kindergarten students.
Four Heroes Elementary School offers a Two-way Dual Language program for incoming kindergarten students. Under this model, the district will seek to enroll equal numbers of students from Spanish-speaking and English-speaking homes.
Under both models, kindergarten students spend 90% of their day learning in Spanish to facilitate early Spanish acquisition, with 10% of the day dedicated to English Language Development. As students' progress through the program each year, instruction in English gradually increases until students spend roughly half of their day learning in each language by Grade 4.
