Social Emotional Learning

Social Emotional Learning (SEL) supports students by developing the skills they need to flourish academically, personally and professionally, excel post-graduation as lifelong learners, and become positive forces in their communities. The district implemented SEL as part of Goal 3 of the 2018-23 District Improvement Plan.

What is Social Emotional Learning (SEL)?

SEL is an integral part of education and human development. Daily instruction in SEL enables the positive support of students as they acquire knowledge, skills and attitudes to:

  • Develop healthy identities
  • Manage emotions
  • Achieve personal and collective goals
  • Feel and show empathy for others
  • Establish and maintain supportive relationships
  • Make caring, responsible decisions

SEL at Tyee Park Elementary School

Tyee Park focuses on five competencies of SEL during instruction and activities: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills and responsible decision making. Students who actively practice and master the five competencies of SEL perform better academically, have reduced stress and depression, and exhibit an improved attitude toward school.

Tyee Park has incorporated daily SEL practices and materials into classrooms throughout campus to support the achievement of Goal 3 of their 2021-22 School Improvement Plan.

Goal #3: Social Emotional Goal

Measured by the 2020-21 Whole Child Whole Day Student Perception Survey, 71% of Tyee Park students believed that adults in the building cared about their absence or disengagement and 79.5% of students shared that they enjoyed engaging in school most days. By Spring 2022, Tyee Park estimated that 89.5% or more students report that they enjoy engaging in school and that the adults in the building care if they are present and engaged.

ROAR is an acronym that stands for respectful, optimized learning, advocate and responsible.

ROAR Expectations is a model that guides and encourages positive student behavior throughout the entirety of the school day, including bus rides and before and after school hours. Students are able to reference ROAR expectation materials for support for every location of campus.

The expectations for each letter may be adjusted to apply to a designated location.
