Student, Parent and Community Involvement

Idlewild Elementary is an official International Baccalaureate school for the Primary Years Programme (IB PYP). We are one of a select number of schools in the state of Washington that offer this rigorous program. This focus we believe will best help prepare our students to be successful in the 21st Century. Inquiry teaching is an important component to the IB PYP program, as well as ensuring that all students are exposed to a second language. Idlewild has chosen Spanish. Idlewild and IB PYP program welcomes active participation, we understand that the more you know and are involved increases student achievement.

Idlewild offers many after school activities. Through the Clover Park foundation, Idlewild offers an after school band program for our 3-5 grades. (There is a small fee associated with this program.) Idlewild offers after school academic support in reading and math as well. There is a YMCA before and after school program available to our parents for a fee.

Parents are encouraged and welcomed as active members of their children’s education; as a result, they play a major part in our program at Idlewild. Over 100 parents sign up as volunteers; many of them work throughout the school on a regular, weekly basis.

Parent volunteers work in all of our classrooms, assisting with academics, parties, field trips and activities which support teachers in their efforts to provide exciting, well developed learning activities. Volunteers also help maintain gardens. We also have the Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads of Great Students) program. This is where dads volunteer to spend the day at school. Idlewild had one of the largest turnout in the district.

More than 80% of our parents are members of our very active PTA. Regular activities include open house, meet and greet, fund raisers, spirit sales, clothing and food drives, assemblies, family activities (bingo, dinners), Science Fantastic, academic achievement recognition, carnival, book fairs, classroom parties, and many more family centered activities. PTA fund raisers support after school programs, testing practice materials and purchase needed equipment. We are extremely proud of the consistent support our PTA provides to our whole school community.
