Student, Parent and Community Involvement

Throughout the school year, we used our School Improvement plan as a guide to create and strengthen the partnerships between our school, our families, and our community. Our Meriwether learning community benefited enormously from the many volunteers who generously gave countless hours in the support of our students and staff. The Meriwether Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) planned and put on many family events and fundraisers.

At Meriwether we've enjoyed a relationship with the 42nd Military Police Brigade here at Joint Base Lewis-McChord. Our soldiervolunteers participated in many school events including the Math Night, Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Fair, and the always popular Field Day.

We are committed to student achievement and learning at Meriwether Elementary. We recognize the vital role parents and family members play in our children's learning. In our School Improvement Plan, we laid out specific strategies aimed at helping our students achieve at higher levels:

  • Our staff includes a full-time Interventionist whose role is to work with small groups of students during the school day and provides them with additional instruction in reading. The students receiving this assistance are identified by assessment scores, teacher referral, and academic performance.
  • Our primary grades practiced "Walk-To- Read," a model in which students walk to a classroom at their grade level for instruction targeted at their specific performance level. Staff utilizes the Dynamic Indicators of Early Literacy (DIBELs) to track student growth in grades K-2.
  • We utilized our web page and the online Blackboard Connects automated calling program to communicate consistently with families about events at the school as well as a weekly family bulletin.
  • We were able to provide many extended learning opportunities. For our after school math program, struggling students were identified and provided with additional math instruction twice each week from January through April. The STEM program took place after school for students in grade 3, 4, and 5 and culminated in our school's STEM Fair.
  • The Meriwether staff used a pro-active approach to school-wide discipline known as Positive Behavior Intervention Supports (PBIS). Our PBIS program included developing and teaching specific behavioral expectations for Community Time, hallways, lunchroom, and recess. During our daily Community Time, students were constantly reminded of the importance of being safe, respectful, responsible, and courageous.
