Clover Park School District celebrates National Board Certificated teachers

Five Clover Park School District teachers were celebrated at a National Board for Professional Teaching Standards pinning ceremony and reception on Dec. 6. Harrison Preparatory School’s Nina Lary-Kimmel and Park Lodge Elementary’s Thomas Serrriane achieved the distinction for the first time, while Beachwood Elementary’s Leah Bearden and Clover Park High School’s Ron Olson and Kitti Wheeler were recognized for renewing their certification.

Superintendent Debbie LeBeau opened the event with a speech describing the significance of national board certification. “National Board Certification is the highest teaching credential in our profession,” she remarked.

LeBeau reported that more than 80 percent of studies done on student achievement show that students of National Board Certified Teachers (NBCT) outperformed those of their non-certified colleagues. According to LeBeau, studies also show that NBCTs are especially effective with special needs and minority students.

There are currently 96 NBCTs teaching in Clover Park School District, with an anticipated 40 more to submit portfolios in spring 2017. For more information certification, visit the National Board’s website.
