2017-18 Schedule Change-Late Start Wednesdays

Beginning with the 2017-18 school year, Clover Park School District will implement one-hour, late-starts most Wednesday mornings.

During this common time, certificated staff will meet in grade level or department teams. They will review and analyze student data, revise teaching strategies and practices and collaborate to improve student achievement. Teachers will also design additional time and support for students who need it, and enrichment for students who already “get it.” We are committed to using this time to improve student learning and will monitor our progress on district, state and national assessments.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Why is Clover Park School District changing from nine half days for professional development to 29 late start Wednesdays for professional development and collaboration?
We believe we can improve student achievement by collaborating more frequently and on a more regular basis. The change to late start Wednesdays provides a consistent time most weeks during the school year for certificated staff to meet in professional learning communities (PLCs) to review and analyze student data, revise their teaching strategies and practices and collaborate to improve student achievement.
Use of PLCs in each school will increase collaboration across the district. Teachers can respond and adjust teaching strategies in a more timely manner with regular collaboration. Teachers and other certificated staff will have time during the day to collaborate. Data from other school districts using PLCs show student learning improves significantly.
  2. Does the change to late start Wednesdays impact all Clover Park School District schools?
Yes, all schools across the district will start late on the designated Wednesdays.
  3. On late start Wednesdays, when will my child go to school?
As an example, if your student's regular start time during the week is 8:30 a.m., your student will start school an hour later, at 9:30 a.m. on late start Wednesday. Please refer to your student’s school regular start and dismissal times.

  4. When will the late start Wednesdays begin?
The change to late start Wednesdays is effective with the 2017-18 school year. The first late start Wednesday is Wednesday, Sept. 20. Basically, every Wednesday during the school year, students will have a one-hour late start with the exception of:
    • Parent conference Wednesdays in the fall and spring;
    • The day before Thanksgiving; and
    • The last four weeks of school.
The updated 2017-18 school year calendar (English and Español), which shows all the late start Wednesdays, is posted on the district website, under calendars.
  5. How will this impact the instructional time my child receives?
The late start Wednesday schedule maintains instructional time for students.
  6. If there is a late start due to bad weather or other issues on a late start Wednesday, will the schedule change?
If the school operates on a late-start schedule for bad weather or other issues on a late-start Wednesday, the PLC will not be held and the school will follow the emergency schedule (i.e., one or two-hour late start). This information will be included in notifications to families.
  7. Are bus schedules being changed due to the late start Wednesdays?
Yes, the transportation department is developing its schedules and routes for the 2017-18 school year now. In early August, the schedules will be finalized and available on the district website.
  8. What input did you receive from families? From staff?
A district committee made up of school and district administrators, developed surveys for families and staff members. The input from the survey has been reviewed and considered. Approximately 60 percent of families who completed the survey supported the change to late start Wednesdays and 70 percent of staff members who participated in the survey agreed with the change as well. We also received feedback from families through the district website and social media channels and that information was shared as well.
  9. This change impacts my family's schedule and my current child care arrangements. Were these issues considered?
Yes, we understand it will be a scheduling change for families. For that reason, we are communicating this change now, so families can plan ahead for next school year. In addition, local child care centers have been notified of the change to late start Wednesdays and removal of professional development half days.
  10. Where can I get more information on the schedule change for 2017-18?
