GRAND OPENING FOR BEACHWOOD ELEMENTARY SLATED FOR sEPTEMBER 22
Clover Park School District (CPSD) will host a grand opening celebration for the new Beachwood Elementary School on Tuesday, Sept. 22 at 4:30 p.m. The grand opening, which celebrates the construction and completion of the school, takes place at Beachwood Elementary on Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM). The event will include a ribbon cutting ceremony and self-guided tours of Beachwood Elementary. The event ends at 6 p.m.
Special guests include U.S. Rep. Denny Heck; former U.S. Congressman Norm Dicks; and JBLM Deputy Joint Base Commander COL Will Phillips. Light refreshments will be served.
In 2006, CPSD began a partnership with JBLM to evaluate and quantify the conditions and capacity of the six elementary schools on the base. The outcome of that study kicked off the Military Child Education Initiative, which raised awareness of failing school infrastructures on military bases across the United States. After dozens of tours and outreach to officials with the U.S. Department of Defense, U.S. Congress and the White House, $250 million was included in the Fiscal Year 2011 (FY11) defense appropriations bill to address the condition of educational facilities on military installations nationwide.
CPSD’s Carter Lake Elementary School and Hillside Elementary School were the first two schools across the nation to be completed as a result of the Military Child Education Initiative. Meriwether and Rainier Elementary were the third and fourth CPSD schools to receive funding from the Department of Defense’s Office of Economic Adjustment (OEA) and Washington state’s school construction assistance program. Beachwood was the fifth of six elementary schools located on JBLM to receive funding.
“The grand opening of the new Beachwood Elementary School represents a federal, state and local partnership designed to ensure our military students have access to the safe and updated facilities they deserve,” said Debbie LeBeau, Clover Park School District Superintendent.
Beachwood has a capacity of 450 students. BCRA was the architect for the new school and Skanska was the general contractor. The school totals nearly 69,000 square feet.
An additional CPSD school on JBLM, Evergreen Elementary, is currently under construction.
Community members are invited to attend the grand opening celebration. The school is located at 8890 Concord Avenue on JBLM-Lewis North. Parking is limited; carpooling is encouraged. For community members without access to JBLM, visitor passes may be obtained at the JBLM-Lewis Main visitor center, I-5 exit 120. The visitor pass process may take longer on busy days, so community members should plan accordingly.
