Student, Parent and Community Involvement
We encourage parents and community members to visit Woodbrook and be involved in their child’s school experience. Please monitor our website to see exact dates and times for our activities. Another important connection for parents includes monitoring and supporting homework completion. Find a good place in your home where distractions are minimal and your child can study. Middle school is a developmental period that requires parents to stay closely connected to their child and the school. We want parents and families to feel welcome and offer multiple opportunities for parents to monitor their child’s learning. This includes Family Access where student grades can be reviewed and missing assignments noted.
Joint Base Lewis McChord is one of our biggest supporters and partners. Thanks to our military partners, Woodbrook Middle School offers many after school programs. The Army Youth Programs in Your Neighborhood (AYPYN)funds clubs and activities for ALL Woodbrook students. Parents, community members, and staff are often involved in conducting the after school AYPYN programs. For students needing academic support there is Homework Club, tutoring, as well as math and reading interventions with teachers present to assist.
Nearly 80% of our student body are members of military families and many program offerings meet the unique needs of military children. The Department of Defense works with Woodbrook Middle School to offer additional support for the well-being of our children. Thanks to our military connections we are also staffed with a medical doctor and Teen Wellness Clinic on site to serve the needs of our military students.
“The Wildcat Way” is a driving force at Woodbrook. Students, staff and community members build a respectful culture and climate that includes being our best selves and doing our best work. This includes student leadership activities, mentoring, and recognition events that reinforce this effort.
School Improvement Plan
The Woodbrook staff focuses on meeting each child where they are academically and supporting them to increase their achievement at an accelerated rate. In 2015 and 2016 Woodb rook Middle School was identified as a “School of Distinction.” This means we were in the top 5% of middle schools in Washington to make the most growth in reading and math sustained over a 5 year period of time. In other words, regardless of the skill level Woodbrook students start with, they make great growth while under our tutelage.
2016-17 Goal for Math, Literacy and Science: All district and school staff will ensure that all students meet or exceed the minimum growth target of 4 additional percentage points on the district’s Annual Measureable Objectives. Disparities among all sub-groups will be eliminated as measured by state, district, and classroom assessments.
