Lakes High School officially opens its doors to community
The sidewalk in front of the new Lakes High School was packed with students, staff and community members in celebration of the Grand Opening of the new school on Sept. 15.
ASB President Margie Potoa'e kicked things off with a welcome message, followed by the presentation of the colors by the Lakes High School Army JROTC and the singing of the National Anthem. Event speakers included Superintendent Debbie LeBeau, Board President Walt Kellcy, Jr., Principal Karen Mauer-Smith and Mayor Doug Richardson.
The band, cheer squad and dance team led attendees in singing the high school's fight song, prior to the official ribbon cutting by the superintendent, board of directors, former board members and superintendent, principal and former principal and ASB president. Attendees were welcomed into the school for tours and refreshments. Several of the high school's clubs also had informational displays.
The new high school is the result of Lakewood-area voters approving a $65 million bond in 2006. The new Lakeview Hope Academy, which opened its doors in February 2008, was also the result of the 2006 bond.
The ground for the new Lakes High School was broken in 2008. Since that time, construction crews built the new school in three phases—while students remained on campus. Phase I included the Pathways building, which opened in 2009 and houses classrooms, the library and Performing Arts Center. Phase II brought the Success Building, which opened last January, and features a new cafeteria, gymnasium, pool, classrooms and administrative offices. Phase III includes a new athletic fields, tennis courts, site work and landscaping and a new bus loop, parking lots and sidewalks.
