Lakewood Career Academy hosts Grand Opening

Staff from the Lakewood Career Academy (LCA)—formerly Alternatives for Individuals High School—welcomed students, families and community members to their new home on the campus of Clover Park Technical College (CPTC) on Sept. 13.

The event featured welcome remarks from Principal Deb Shanafelt, Superintendent Debbie LeBeau, CPTC Vice President of Instruction Lori Banaszak and Northwest Career and Technical High School (NWCTHS) Director Loren Davis. Assistant Principal Kevin Rupprecht played a slideshow of 2010 student photos for participants.

Following the program, attendees were treated to tours and refreshments.

The school has undergone many substantial changes over the past five years, including: a two-year task force study of the district's alternative education programs from; a partnership with Federal Way Public Schools' Internet Academy to offer online credit retrieval and supplemental courses for students; moving to a new location in February 2011; partnering with NWCTHS and CPTC in March 2011 and getting a new name in July 2011.

"Lakewood Career Academy is a career preparation program," explained Shanafelt. "Our students are fortunate to have the opportunity to attend high school on a college campus. Here, they learn the academic and career skills they'll need to be ready for life after high school."
