Possession of Weapons

Students who possess a weapon or carry, exhibit, display or draw any weapon or any item apparently capable of producing bodily harm in a manner which, under the circumstances and at a time and place, manifests intent to intimidate another or warrants alarm for the safety of others shall be subject to discipline, suspension, expulsion or emergency expulsion.

The following steps shall apply:

  1. The principal/designee shall place the student on emergency expulsion pending completion of the investigation and determination of whether the student is an immediate and continuing danger to himself/herself, other students, staff or administrators.
  2. The principal/designee shall notify the parents/guardians and request an immediate conference.
  3. For middle schools and high schools, unless otherwise provided by law, and in cases involving the possession of a firearm, air gun or items crafted to look like a firearm, the principal/designee shall, without exception, expel the student. Students expelled under this policy shall not be considered for re-entry into regular school programs within the district for a period of one year after the date of the violation.

In cases involving other weapons, the principal/designee shall expel the student, unless long-term suspension is warranted under the circumstances.

In cases involving pocket knives, the student shall be subject to discipline, suspension, or expulsion.

  4. For elementary students, the principal will take action as appropriate.
  5. The principal/designee shall notify district and law enforcement personnel as appropriate.
