Meet the Board of Directors

Dr. Marty Schafer, President, Director District 4, term expires December 2021
Dr. Marty Schafer has lived in Lakewood for more than 17 years. He is currently serving his seventh term as school board president since first joining the board in April 2005. He is married and has three daughters, two of which graduated from Clover Park schools. His third daughter is married and lives in Lakewood. Schafer is the board liaison for student achievement and secondary schools. He is committed to building a culture of student leadership and a stronger partnership between Clover Park School District and the city of Lakewood. He has a bachelor's degree in urban planning from Western Washington University and a doctorate in ministry leadership from Golden Gate Theological Seminary. Schafer volunteers in the schools, mentors student athletes, works with churches in the community and is an Instructional Consultant and advocate for public education.
Carole Jacobs, Vice President, Director District 2, term expires December 2019
Carole Jacobs is in her sixth, four-year term on the Clover Park School District Board of Directors. She and her husband have lived in Lakewood for more than 25 years and have three children—all of whom have graduated from Clover Park schools. Jacobs has served four terms as board president and is currently a member of the Clover Park Citizens Committee for Schools. She worked on the districtwide Closing the Achievement Gap (CTAG) committee after serving on the state achievement gap board. She holds a bachelor's degree from Western Washington University, and was a substitute teacher before being elected to the school board. Jacobs has been involved in our schools for more than 20 years and enjoys opportunities to visit with students and teachers. Her personal involvement has ranged from PTA officer and volunteer, to Lakes choir mom, to elementary reading tutor.
Becki Kellcy, Director District 1, term expires December 2019
Becki Kellcy was elected in November 2015 and assumed her role in December 2015. Kellcy has worked as a preschool teacher and substitute teacher in grades K-12. She also taught in a federally granted, after-school enrichment program for ESL students. She has a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Arizona.
Becki lives in Lakewood with her husband, Josh, and their five children, three of whom attend school in the Clover Park School District. They have settled in Lakewood after serving eight years of active duty in the US Army. Josh continues to work for the Army as a civilian as well as serve in the US Army Reserves.
Becki is active in a local Mothers of Preschoolers group, a member of the PTA and is very involved in the children’s ministry at her church in Lakewood. Kellcy loves children and is committed to partnering with and serving the community to foster academic success in Clover Park schools.
Alyssa Anderson Pearson, Director District 3, term expires December 2021
Alyssa Anderson Pearson was elected to the board in November 2017. A lifelong Lakewood resident, she currently works at an information technology company in Tacoma and earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration and her MBA from Northern Arizona University. Alyssa lives in Lakewood with her husband and has been involved with local service organizations. Alyssa hopes to build stronger community partnerships and increase district transparency.
Paul Wagemann, Legislative Liaison, Director District 5, term expires December 2019
John Paul Wagemann was appointed to the board in 2009 and elected in November of 2009 to fill a vacated position on the board. He was re-elected in November of 2011 for a second term, and in November 2015 for his third term. He currently serves as the board's Legislative Representative. He and his wife Linda (Stolz) have lived in Lakewood since 1991. They have two sons who both graduated from Clover Park schools. Wagemann has a Bachelor of Science degree in aeronautics and astronautics from the University of Washington. He is a retired U.S. Marine Corps officer, serving from 1968 to 1991 as a fighter and test pilot. He volunteers as a board member of the Lakewood YMCA, vice-chairs the city of Lakewood's Planning Commission and serves as a Group Leader with Bible Study Fellowship. He enjoys working with the Clover Park Community as we help all of our children reach their highest potential.
Doug Kernutt, Superintendent/Secretary of the Board
Doug Kernutt will serve as interim superintendent of Clover Park School District for the 2018-19 school year. He got his start in the district in 2007 as the district’s administrator for human resources. Prior to coming to CPSD, he served five years as superintendent for Centralia School District and spent nine years prior to that appointment as assistant superintendent.
Kernutt holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Warner Pacific College, a master’s degree in counseling from Central Washington University and a doctoral degree in school administration from Washington State University. He has worked in education for the last 43 years.
He retired in 2014 but returned to CPSD in 2017 as the district’s executive director for student support.
